139: Aseptic Nursing Technique at the Bedside

This four-part program provides a comprehensive overview of aseptic technique on the patient care unit.  It includes a clear explanation of the chain of infection and how asepsis breaks links in this chain.  Specific topics covered include hand hygiene techniques; methods for prevention of cross contamination;  the role of personal hygiene in preventing cross contamination; assessment of a patient’s risks for infection; Standard Precautions and Transmission-Based Precautions; available personal protective equipment and the proper use of each type; the affects of isolation on the patient and ways the nurse can reduce negative impact; and establishing and maintaining a sterile field at the patient bedside, including unassisted sterile gloving technique.

The series is enhanced with hospital based footage, graphic depictions of key points, and clear lists of important concepts.  The information in this program applies to all areas of patient care.

Schools: Basic:  Programs 1 through 3 introduce infection control. Mid-level: Program 4 covers bedside sterile procedures.

Healthcare Facilities: Nursing orientation. First 3 programs applicable to all healthcare providers. Addresses Joint Commission patient safety guidelines

139.1 Transmission of Infection (16 min.)

1. Describe each of the links in the Chain of Infection.
2. List criteria to be included in an evaluation of an individual’s possibility of having or acquiring an infection.
3. Discuss the concept of “asepsis consciousness.”
4. Delineate specific steps staff can utilize to prevent infection from occurring or spreading.
5. Teach visitors the use of basic hand hygiene before and after each visit.

139.2 Standard Precautions (17 min.)

1. Describe ways in which a nurse’s grooming and attire can reduce the spread of infection in the clinical setting.
2. Perform effective hand hygiene using both soap and hand gel.
3. Define standard precautions.
4. List the types of personal protective equipment (PPE) that can be utilized and identify specific situations when each is to be worn.
5. Discuss ways to ensure that equipment used at the bedside does not spread infection through cross contamination.
6. State how a nurse can verify that both reusable and disposable supplies are sterile.
7. Explain methods to clean a patient room using standard precautions.
8. Cite how to dispose of biohazard waste.

139.3 Transmission-Based Precautions (15 min.)

1.Define transmission-based precautions.
2. Compare and contrast droplet, airborne, and contact precautions.
3. State the rationale for using gloves, gowns, masks, face shields, and goggles.
4. Identify situations when a fit-tested, high filtration mask is required.
5. Demonstrate how to correctly don and remove gloves, gowns, masks, face shields, and goggles.
6. Explain the procedures for safely discarding PPE following use.

139.4 The Sterile Field (17 min.)

1. Set up a sterile field.
2. Discuss methods of working within a sterile field that prevent contamination of the filed.
3. Verify sterility of both reusable and disposable sterile packs and supplies.
4. Don sterile gloves.
5. Perform a sterile skin prep.
